The Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office was established in 1846, and Sheriff Matt Spence serves as the 57th Sheriff of Sheboygan County.

Sheriff Spence began his career with the office in 2002 as a Patrol Officer. Throughout his tenure, he has held the ranks of Corporal, Sergeant, and Lieutenant within the Patrol Division. He also served as the Lieutenant of Criminal Investigations and as the Captain of Patrol and Criminal Investigations under former Sheriff Cory Roeseler. Following Sheriff Roeseler’s retirement, Sheriff Spence was appointed to complete the remainder of the term. His experience includes serving as a member or leader for several specialized units, including SWAT, the Honor Guard, Water Safety Patrol, and Bike Patrol.

Sheriff Spence earned his Law Enforcement Certification from the Wisconsin State Patrol Academy as part of the 2nd Class of the Wisconsin Police Corps. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh. Additionally, he is a graduate of the 281st Session of the FBI National Academy.

Dedicated to community service, Sheriff Spence has served as a liaison for the Law Enforcement Torch Run and as a longtime coach for the local Special Olympics Swim Team. He was recently appointed to the State Board of Directors for Special Olympics Wisconsin, representing the Badger State Sheriffs' Association. Sheriff Spence is a firm proponent of community partnerships and remains active in local events and committees, emphasizing the importance of giving back to the residents of Sheboygan County.
