Sheboygan County Planning & Conservation is fortunate to receive an annual grant from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to fund an Aquatic Invasive Species Coordinator. This individual is responsible for educating the public on the importance of limiting aquatic invasive species migration, planning programs to combat the spread, preventing infestations, and treatment activities on certain identified properties.

Water is our most important resource. Aquatic invasive species threaten native habitats and our most precious resource. A listing of aquatic invasive species found in Wisconsin, along with an abundance of other information regarding invasives can be found at: https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/Invasives

If you see a non-native species on a Sheboygan County waterbody that has not previously been identified, please do not hesitate to contact Sheboygan County’s Aquatic Invasive Species Coordinator, Katie Hanson, at 920-459-1375 or Katie.Hanson@SheboyganCounty.com.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Clean Boats, Clean Waters (CBCW)- Inspectors are stationed at boat landings to conduct watercraft inspections and educate boaters & anglers on how to avoid transporting aquatic invasive species into or away from our lakes and rivers.

Most inspector positions are unpaid volunteer positions. However, some lake associations hire a few paid inspectors each season. Contact us for more information!

Project RED (Riverine Early Detectors) - Individuals learn how to monitor moving water (rivers and streams) for aquatic invasives. Monitor on your own time and at your own pace - either from land or from the water! Contact us if you or your organization are interested in signing up for a Project RED training!

Snapshot Day - Individuals join Sheboygan County’s AIS Coordinator to learn how to monitor bodies of water for aquatic invasives. The morning starts with a short presentation/training session from which you will disperse to pre-determined bodies of water for sampling and monitoring. Open to people of all ages (children must be accompanied by an adult). This is a yearly event with 2025’s date being Saturday, August 9th!

Education:

Our Aquatic Invasive Species Coordinator is available to give educational presentations to fishing groups, boating clubs, lake associations, and other organizations about the importance of stopping the spread of invasive species. Contact Katie at 920-459-1375 or email Katie.Hanson@SheboyganCounty.com to inquire.
