Public Well Water or Transient Non-Community Well Program (TNC)

A transient non-community water system (TN or TNCWS) is a public water system that provides water where people do not remain for long periods of time. It is a water system serving at least 25 people at least 60 days of the year, including churches, seasonal campgrounds, gas stations, restaurants, motels, public restrooms and taverns. Transient Non-Community (TN) Water Systems do not serve the same 25 people six months of the year or more. Staff members are included in the count of total people served. As  an agent of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), we sample locations that would qualify as a TNC system annually, or as needed based on EPA regulations.

See this fact sheet on Transient Non-Community Wells for more information.

What Do We Test For?

Annually our department will sample for bacteria and nitrate in accordance with the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and EPA regulations. Sheboygan county has approximately 160 public wells that we sample annually.

Problem Solving With Your Well

If your well has had bacterial issues please work with your assigned sanitarian. They will continue to take additional sampling in accordance with DNR and EPA regulations. Please do NOT chlorinate until directed to do so. When you have been directed to chlorinate please see Well disinfection and cleaning techniques. We highly recommend utilizing a professional to complete the chlorination and review your well. A list of well drillers can be found by clicking on the button below.
